Ẹ̀káàbọ̀t

The gold line traces the pitch of each syllable.

Answer your grandmother in Yoruba.

Ẹ̀káàbọ̀t teaches diaspora kids and adults to speak Yoruba through real conversations and short daily lessons, one tone at a time.

Free during beta. We’ll email you when your spot opens.

Talk freely, or follow the path. Most people do both.

Practise the conversation you're nervous about tonight, then keep your streak going with a five-minute lesson tomorrow.

A tutor that answers in Yoruba

Ask anything in English or Yoruba. Your tutor replies in Yoruba, explains what it said, and tells you how people actually use it.

Your tutor
I'm calling my grandma tomorrow morning. How do I greet her?
Say Ẹ káàárọ̀, ma. That means "Good morning, ma." Use Ẹ, not O, with elders. Adding ma at the end shows respect, and she'll notice.
What if she asks how I am?
Try Àlàáfíà ni, ma, which means "I'm well, ma."

A daily path you can measure

Short lessons, a daily check-in, and a clear level, so you always know how far you've come and what's next.

  1. Greetings and respectMorning, afternoon, welcome
  2. Family and namesIn progress, 3 of 5 lessons
  3. Food and the marketNumbers, prices, bargaining
  4. Full conversationsSpeak without switching to English

Every lesson happens somewhere real: a call home to Grandma, the market in Lagos, an owambe party, a naming ceremony.

Same letters, three different words.

Yoruba is tonal. Change the pitch of one syllable and you have said a different word. Most apps skip this. Ẹ̀káàbọ̀t teaches it from your first greeting.

“I sat at my grandmother's table and couldn't respond when she spoke to me in Yoruba. I watched her face. Ẹ̀káàbọ̀t exists so that never happens to another generation.”
